DPhil in Neurophysiology
University of Manitoba: BSc in Microbiology, neuroscience, and philosophy
Queen's University: MD in progress

Raed is a medical student at Queen's University and previously completed a BSc from the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with the highest student award for his contributions to university life. Recently he has served as Vice-President of the National Health Sciences Students' Association, promoting collaboration between healthcare students across Canada. Motivated by an interest in global health and human rights, he has been active with Amnesty International for years, founded a global health student group and volunteered at a hospital and orphanage in northern Tanzania. He enjoys working with youth, having been a wilderness retreat leader for at-risk teenagers, a mentor for refugees, war-affected kids and young burn victims, as well as a black belt karate instructor for children. Academically, Raed's passion lies in understanding the brain. With a particular interest in movement disorders, he has done electrophysiological research in spinal locomotor networks and the vestibular system. At Oxford, he plans to pursue a DPhil in neurophysiology and shed light on conditions ranging from childhood dystonia to Parkinson's disease. His ultimate aim is to become a clinician-scientist, and he hopes to translate findings from research into improved treatments for individuals with neurological diseases.
